Miami Lighthouse for the Blind

Miami, Florida

New three-story facility including a two-story parking garage and an educational level that houses training rooms and classrooms for the blind and visually impaired. Support spaces include common teaching labs, arts and crafts, and a computer center. Indoor and outdoor simulation spaces and a kitchen/dining complete the educational functions. Special emphasis and attention to detail were required for the safety and wellbeing of the students, such as an increase in the tactile notification, audio notification, easy-to-use stairs, etc. Additionally, to enhance the safety of the younger children, a separate set of egress stairs was designed to bifurcate the students by age. The concern is that in an emergency, older children can inadvertently tumble younger ones.
